The Splinter Soul

The Splinter Soul is the tenth book in the The Metalwood Saga, and it serves as the epic conclusion to Season Two.

The novel brings the cosmic, multi-planetary conflict to a devastating climax as the newly freed Twins rampage across the worlds. The scattered heroes must confront an apocalyptic army of ghosts, the shocking truth behind the human Remnant, and the ultimate betrayal of Orym. The book dramatically alters the universe forever, culminating in the permanent deactivation of magic.

Synopsis

The Army of Souls and the True People

Following the release of the Twins, billions of ghostly human souls—victims of the Sundering who had been trapped in Ambarhal—begin pouring back into the physical world through burning Prime Trees. Devoid of conscious thought, these souls are drawn to emotion and magical energy, swarming and attacking anyone in their path. In the Thesserin Desert, Quynn forms an unlikely alliance with Talon and a stranded army of rylak to fight off the relentless ghostly hordes.

Meanwhile, Jalnab shocks the heroes by revealing his true identity: he is the ancient human author John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Tolkien explains that the Remnant's primitive language and culture were entirely fabricated. In reality, they are the "True People," a highly advanced technological society that survived the Sundering by retreating to Gondor, a massive underground city hidden beneath Lusvunub. Furthermore, the True People secretly built the Escape Module—a heavily armed, high-tech evacuation fleet physically integrated into the underbellies of the floating sky cities.

Orym's Ascension

Unbeknownst to the others, Orym (the ancient Imprisoner, Aten) enacts his millennia-old master plan. Using the Pyramid Offensive System, he harnesses the energy of a million trapped souls to launch a direct, overwhelming attack on Guruthos (Xyclami). The immense strain of the attack forces Xyclami to undergo an emergency core reboot, which instantly strips the Twins of their Operator privileges and renders them powerless.

As the machine reboots, Orym seizes control, becoming the sole Operator of Xyclami and effectively ascending to godhood. However, Xyclami was specifically designed to require two Operators with opposing Alignments (light and dark) to maintain balance. Operating the machine alone immediately begins to destabilize Orym's mind and warp reality around him. Driven mad by the unfiltered power, Orym destroys Nekhrumet and begins twisting the ruins of Old San Francisco, conjuring bizarre, nightmarish buildings and horrifying monsters from his own unchecked imagination.

The Ultimate Sacrifices

Desperate to stop Orym's rampage, Lorelei and Allain confront him in the Muir Woods. Using his mastery of mistweaving, Allain crafts an impossibly beautiful, perfect illusion of the destroyed alien homeworld of Starmist Prime. The stunning vision moves Orym to tears, momentarily halting his destruction. However, in a moment of callous cruelty, Orym effortlessly lashes out with Destroyer magic, brutally slicing Lorelei and Allain in half and killing them instantly.

To distract Orym, John Ronald and Dill mobilize the True People, breaking apart the Unders of the sky cities to deploy the heavily armed Escape Module and unleashing massive war machines (Destroyers) from Gondor. While Orym easily withstands the technological assault with a green lifebubble, his concentration finally breaks when he spots a blonde woman firing a massive gun at him—a woman he believes to be his lost love, Tiala. His shield flickers, allowing hundreds of projectiles and energy beams to strike him, sending him crashing into an abandoned rickhouse.

Dill tracks his father to the ruined building, determined to stop him with words rather than weapons. In a poignant confrontation, Dill challenges Orym's thirst for power, reminding him of Tiala's love and pointing out the genuine bonds of affection shared among the survivors gathered in the room. The truth pierces Orym's hardened heart; he breaks down in tears, realizing his megalomania and desire to play god was simply a misguided pursuit for love, respect, and a desire to create rather than destroy. Renouncing his godhood, Orym accepts soulsoothing healing from Phoenix and agrees that they can build a better world together.

However, just as Orym achieves redemption, the true killing blow arrives from an unexpected source. A surviving fragment of the dead mage Cariel's soul takes control of millions of spiders, swarming the rickhouse and pouring into Orym's mouth, eyes, and ears. Channeling the energy of millions of souls, the spiders attack Xyclami's connection directly through Orym, forcing the machine into an emergency reboot and killing Orym before he can make amends.

The End of Magic

With Xyclami demanding new Operators within sixty seconds to prevent the machine from taking on a life of its own, Trey and Quynn grab the device together. As the two halves of the ancient mage Tarathiel, their souls are immediately plunged into a violent struggle for dominance. Quynn attempts to overpower Trey with sheer hatred and violence, but Arra intervenes. She helps Trey realize that his true strength is not violence, but his profound capacity for love and healing. Embracing his true self, Trey assimilates Quynn completely, permanently reuniting their splintered souls into the whole, balanced Tarathiel.

Now fully in control of Xyclami, Tarathiel understands the true scope of the alien technology. Recognizing that magic has caused nothing but death and sorrow across all three planets, Tarathiel issues a final command to Xyclami: to shut down and cease all operations forever. In an instant, all magic fades from the universe.

Epilogue

In a world free of magic and gods, the survivors begin to rebuild. Elanil and the superuser Rylan share a tearful reunion and choose to build a life together in Pano Sylrantheas. Phoenix and Imra, having found love in the crucible of war, retire to the sky city of New Paris. Dill accepts a leadership position with John Ronald and the True People, looking forward to a future driven by science and cooperation rather than sorcery.

On the cliffs overlooking the Airon Sea, Tarathiel and Alleria renew their wedding vows in a poignant ceremony that also serves as a mass funeral for their many fallen friends—including Beam, Lorelei, Allain, Silanar, and Orym.

In a secret jungle clearing on Eryn, Kythaela meets peacefully with the Twins. She drops her disguise, revealing herself to be Kira the Prime—the oldest sister of the Twins. With Xyclami's magic gone, Kira unveils the final safeguard of Starmist Prime: a hatching dragon egg. She happily watches it hatch, preparing to shepherd the dragons and remake Eryn into a peaceful new Starmist Prime.

Key Characters

Trey / Quynn (Tarathiel): The two halves of the ancient mage. They are forced to grab Xyclami together to prevent it from going rogue. Trey's capacity for love ultimately conquers Quynn's hatred, allowing them to reintegrate into the complete Tarathiel. He chooses to shut down magic permanently.
Alleria (Arra): Gifted the Bow of Ancient Kings (a weapon made of seven primewoods) by the starving Aiqua people of the Desolation. She helps Trey defeat his darker half and joyfully remarries him.
Orym (Aten): The Imprisoner. He seizes control of Xyclami but goes mad from the unbalanced connection. He heartlessly murders Lorelei and Allain before being killed by Cariel's spider swarm.
Lorelei and Allain: They find unexpected, genuine love amidst the apocalypse. Allain creates a flawless, masterful illusion of Starmist Prime to pacify Orym, but they are both tragically cut in half by Orym's magic.
Jalnab (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien): The famous human author is revealed to have survived the Sundering. He secretly founded the True People, guiding humanity to develop highly advanced quantum technology while hiding from the elves.
Rylan (Wind) and Elanil (Dance): Rylan briefly utilizes his superuser connection and two Books of Amplification to freeze time and save the armies from the Twins. They fall deeply in love and choose to stay in Pano Sylrantheas.
Phoenix (Megan) and Imra: They fight side-by-side against the Army of Souls and eventually find profound romantic comfort with each other in the aftermath of Beam's death.
Kythaela (Kira the Prime): The prophetic Mentor is revealed to actually be the oldest sister of the Twins. She oversees the hatching of dragons on Eryn to carry on the legacy of Starmist Prime.

Magic and Lore Introduced

The True People & Gondor: The human Remnant are actually a front for the "True People". They possess highly advanced technology (quantum entanglement, energy weapons, life extension) and live in Gondor, a massive, illuminated underground city built safely beneath Lusvunub.
The Escape Module: An intricate, high-tech evacuation mechanism secretly built into the Unders of the sky cities by the True People. When deployed, the Unders break apart into thousands of armed, flying metallic fragments.
The Army of Souls: The billions of human souls violently murdered during the Sundering were trapped in Ambarhal. When the Twins are released, these souls spill into the physical world, mindlessly drawn to high emotion and magic.
Operator Imbalance: Xyclami was engineered to require two Operators—one naturally drawn to lightprime magic, and one drawn to darkprime. If a single Operator attempts to control the device, the immense power destabilizes their mind and will eventually kill them.
Xyclami's True Purpose: The device is not inherently a magic generator; it is a hyper-advanced storage drive created by the Starmist Prime scientists to preserve the entirety of their doomed planet's history, culture, and technology.
The End of Magic: By instructing Xyclami to permanently shut down and cease operations, Tarathiel instantly and permanently removes all magic (Talent, Alignment, and Will) from the universe.
