Mission Control

Mission Control

Mission Control is the primary command center for the Cothellon government, located high within the floating city of New San Francisco (also known as City Three). It serves as the technological and operational hub where the Planners coordinate the city's magical infrastructure, monitor its citizens, and oversee the apocalyptic planetary Ascension.

Geography and Environment

Unlike the damp, decaying spaces of the Under, Mission Control is sleek, pristine, and highly advanced. The large room features engineered wood floors and rows of desks equipped with computer monitors, keyboards, and thick manuals. Dozens of commanders, technicians, and operators—dressed in white uniforms and wearing black headsets—man these consoles at all times.

The most striking feature of the room is the massive "screenwall" that takes up the entire front wall, resembling the bridge of a spaceship. This configurable display can show various individual video feeds, system diagnostics, planetary maps, and a master mission timer, or it can merge into a single, massive viewing window.

Key personnel stationed here include the Cundu Lorelei, the Scientist General Orym, the Mission Leader Sylvis, and the leads of the magical corps, such as Nuovis (forcefinders) and Erlan (fallfoilers).

Key Events

The Ascension and the Sabotage

As the catastrophic Typhoon Velma ravages the surface of Earth (Mar), Lorelei accelerates the timetable for the Ascension. From Mission Control, Orym and Lorelei initiate the launch sequence to unite the seven floating cities.

However, a lethal hardware bug intentionally planted by an Eldrim saboteur causes the mission timer to freeze and the mage communications to fail, sending New San Francisco into a dangerous tilt that threatens to crash the city. Disaster is narrowly averted when the engineer Thalanil successfully replaces a sabotaged motherboard deep in Gate Control and coordinates with Orym in Mission Control to reboot the system.

The Whiproom Incident

When the underkid Phoenix accidentally unleashes her untamed forcefinding magic and destroys the whiproom inside The Den, Lorelei and Sylvis watch the destruction unfold live on the screenwall in Mission Control. This massive security breach alerts the Planners to the rogue magic occurring beneath their feet.

The Underkid Takeover

Following the defeat of the Cothellon and the liberation of the sky cities, Mission Control is taken over by the United Under, with Shot acting as the new commander. Working alongside former Cothellon operators like Sylvis and communicating remotely with Small, Shot uses Mission Control to execute a desperate plan: reversing the polarity of the Fennas Elenathon device to channel the city's massive energy reserves into a weapon against the freed Twin, Nelenor.

Destruction

During the battle, Shot and Sylvis coordinate the energy strike from Mission Control. However, Nelenor effortlessly counters the attack, turning the energy beam red and sending it back into the city. The retaliatory strike obliterates Gate Control and triggers a massive chain reaction of fire and explosions. Mission Control, along with the entirety of New San Francisco, is completely annihilated in the blast, sending the flaming wreckage plummeting to the earth below.
