The Whiproom
The whiproom was a horrific torture and sexual violence chamber located within The Den, an elite vice district hidden in the Under of New San Francisco (Newfris). Operating secretly beneath the city's streets, it catered exclusively to wealthy topside "Gentlemen" seeking to fulfill their darkest desires on captured victims.
Geography and Environment
Situated directly beneath the Den's smoking cardroom and above the huntroom (also known as the Gate Room), the whiproom was a large, square chamber built of rough cement and steel. The room was stifling, filled with the echoing sounds of chains and whips, and illuminated by flickering blue fluorescent lights that gave everything a sickly, metallic sheen.
The floor was originally lined with rows of aluminum chairs where victims were chained. High above, the ceiling was crisscrossed with a series of metal rafters, which the killgirls of Her Majesty's Navy utilized to silently stalk their targets and perform acrobatic "rafterruns" via steelstrings. A massive sewer pipe—which served as a maintenance hatch for the Columbus Avenue line—elbowed through the ceiling in the northwest corner of the room. The whiproom was also notable for being the only chamber in the Den equipped with exterior doors leading directly out into the Under.
Following its catastrophic destruction by Phoenix, the room was rebuilt with significant structural reinforcements. The Planners clad the ceiling in stainless-steel plates and crisscrossed the floor with thick metal beams, specifically designed to prevent mages from ripping the room apart again.
Key Events
Phoenix's First Destruction
During an assassination mission for Queen's Crew, Phoenix (Megan) and her partner Beam targeted Gentlemen from the rafters. When Beam's steelstring clip failed, dropping her to the floor where she was swarmed by the sadistic patrons, Phoenix was overcome by overwhelming panic. Her forcefinder magic spiraled entirely out of control. Erratic forcefield bubbles ricocheted wildly around the chamber, shattering the room's metal support pillars and tearing a massive hole in the floor. The floor collapsed, plunging the victims, attackers, and debris into the huntroom below, nearly destroying the entire Den in the process.
The Tenderloin Ambush
Five years later, the whiproom—now heavily reinforced and starkly clean—became a trap. Fleeing from the hostile Tenderloin Crew and the Remnant warrior Zel, Phoenix, Beam, and Rylan rushed into the whiproom seeking an exit. However, they were ambushed, and the Planner leader Lorelei locked the exterior doors, sealing them inside. Outnumbered and desperate, Phoenix intentionally harnessed her fear to summon devastating red firebubbles. The chaotic magic shredded through the Planners' new metal-reinforced floor, obliterating the room once again and dropping everyone into the huntroom below.
