Typhoon Velma
Typhoon Velma (sometimes referred to colloquially by Cothellon officials as the World Storm) is a catastrophic, record-breaking weather event that strikes the California coast immediately prior to the Sundering. Featured prominently in The Fatal Cure (Book 4), the typhoon serves as the primary historical catalyst that pushes both the Eldrim and the Cothellon to enact their final plans for Earth, leading directly to the Ascension of the sky cities and the near-extinction of humanity.
Meteorological Profile
Typhoon Velma is described as an unprecedented weather event. Rapidly strengthening as it approaches the coast, it is upgraded to a Category Five storm, with barometric pressures projected to break the previous world record set in 1979. The National Weather Service issues an immediate mandatory evacuation for the entire Bay Area, warning residents that it is a lethal event and the strongest storm ever recorded to hit the Pacific coast.
At landfall, the storm produces sustained winds in excess of 300 miles per hour. Accompanying the devastating winds is a massive storm surge resembling a tsunami, moving far inland and inundating the city with saltwater.
Impact on San Francisco
The typhoon essentially decimates the city of San Francisco. The storm surge flattens everything west of 19th Avenue, completely destroying the Sunset District. Major neighborhoods like the Marina, Fisherman's Wharf, the Financial District, South Beach, North Beach, and Telegraph Hill are obliterated, and modern high-rises such as the Salesforce and Millennial Towers are destroyed. Only a few structures, like Coit Tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Mission District, manage to miraculously survive the initial onslaught.
The extreme 300 mph winds cause catastrophic structural failures. Stevenson Place, a concrete high-rise housing the American Cancer Society, begins to buckle and tilt before its lower floors collapse entirely, sending a shockwave of debris across the block. During this collapse, the eight-year-old Jason Lim instinctively uses his latent forcefinder magic to temporarily hold up the crumbling ninth floor, saving his mother Jessica and several others from being crushed. Elsewhere on the street, the elven soulsoother Keya is forced to use a rare piece of prime birch to magically heal her human coworker, Rosemary, who suffered a near-fatal head injury after being knocked over by the gale-force winds.
Historical Consequences
While some Cothellon initially question if the storm was magically created by Eldrim stormwardens, it is ultimately concluded by both elven factions that Velma is a natural disaster resulting from human-influenced climate change.
The sheer scale of Velma's destruction convinces the Eldrim High Council that humanity has pushed the planet past a critical environmental tipping point. Spurred by the belief that Earth's ecosystem will not recover without immediate intervention, the Eldrim leader Silanar invokes a Code One emergency to call a World Council. This leads directly to the ratification of the Sundering Act—a darkprime ritual designed to instantly cull ninety-nine percent of the human population.
Meanwhile, anticipating that the storm will force the Eldrim to initiate the Sundering prematurely, Lorelei and the Cothellon realize their window to escape the planet's surface is rapidly closing. In response to the typhoon, they drastically accelerate their timetable, initiating the Ascension of the sky cities a full two weeks early to save their selected human populations from the impending magical genocide.
