Jessica
Jessica Lim is a central character in The Fatal Cure (Book 4) of The Metalwood Saga. She is the human mother of the half-elven forcefinder Jason Lim and the wife of the ancient elven mindmaster Thalanil (who lived with her under the human alias Alan).
Driven by a desperate need to save her terminally ill son, Jessica ventures into the hidden world of elven magic. During her quest, she makes a groundbreaking discovery: she is the first known human to possess lightprime magic as a soulsoother. To cure her son, she commits a terrible act, ultimately securing her family's safety aboard the sky cities during the apocalyptic Sundering. She is the grandmother of the series' main protagonist, Phoenix.
Appearance and Personality
Jessica is a Korean American woman in her early thirties. She has long, dark hair and striking, "haunted blue eyes". Despite her human heritage, she possesses an extraordinary natural agility and grace, capable of easily scaling and balancing high up in trees—a feat that leads the elven mage Keya to marvel that she "may as well have been an elf".
Personality-wise, Jessica is highly intelligent, composed, and steady. She balances warmth with precision, possessing a quiet authority and an understated confidence that naturally grounds those around her. Her maternal drive is absolute and unrelenting; she is willing to confront ancient magic, wield weapons, and even commit murder if it means saving her son's life.
Biography
The Typhoon and the Awakening
Living in San Francisco, Jessica received devastating news: her eight-year-old son, Jason, had been diagnosed with an advanced, incurable cancer in his jaw known as a melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy. While she was with him at the American Cancer Society building, the record-breaking Typhoon Velma struck the city. The storm's incredible winds caused the building's ninth floor to collapse.
As the floor crumbled, Jason miraculously used latent forcefinder magic, drawing power from a wooden doorframe to hold the collapsing ceiling up just long enough for Jessica and the other survivors to escape out the window. During the chaos, Jessica witnessed an elven woman named Keya perform what appeared to be magical healing on another survivor.
The Discovery of Magic
Determined to find Keya and force her to heal Jason, Jessica tracked the woman to the Muir Woods and discovered the hidden elven village of Sylrantheas. Hiding high in a redwood tree, Jessica confronted Keya, begging her to use her healing magic on Jason. Keya tragically informed her that soulsoothing magic could not cure cancer.
However, Keya handed Jessica a piece of prime birch wood to test a theory. To both of their astonishment, the wood warmed in Jessica's hand. Following Keya's instructions, Jessica successfully channeled the magic to heal a dying fern, making her the first known human lightprime mage in history.
The Book of Souls
Believing that advanced magical techniques could bypass the limitations of soulsoothing, Jessica and Keya infiltrated the Sylrantheas church bell tower to steal an ancient artifact known as the Book of Souls. Navigating a bizarre, magically spinning room with puzzle doors, they successfully reached the tower and secured the Book.
Inside, they found an English translation outlining advanced magical modes. However, Keya realized the Book also contained the ritual for the Sundering—a spell designed to wipe out humanity—and refused to let Jessica take it. Desperate, Jessica fought Keya in a harrowing sword duel across the church's narrow catwalks.
Their fight was interrupted by the arrival of the Sylrantheas leader, Silanar, and Jessica's own husband, Alan—who revealed his true identity as the 327-year-old elven mindmaster, Thalanil. Furthermore, Thalanil confessed that Keya was actually his daughter from a previous relationship. As Silanar violently attacked Thalanil, destroying the bell tower's supports, Jessica seized her opportunity. Acting purely to save her dying son, she snatched the Book of Souls from Keya and pushed the elven woman off the platform to her death.
The Fatal Cure and the Ascension
As the bell tower collapsed around them, Jessica touched Jason and channeled her prime birch magic. Using the advanced theories from the Book of Souls, she visualized the particles of the magic itself, twisting their frequency and spectrum. Her modified magic blasted the black cancer cells away, perfectly healing Jason's jaw.
Fleeing the crumbling church, Jessica, Jason, and Thalanil passed through a Cothellon gate, emerging on the surface of the floating sky city, New San Francisco. There, she watched in horror as another sky city crashed into a massive Prime Tree on the ground below. Safely aboard Newfris, Jessica forgave Thalanil for his lifelong deception, securing her family's future in the sky cities as the apocalyptic Sundering was unleashed upon the Earth below. She lived out the rest of her natural human life aboard the sky cities before passing away.
