The Fatal Cure is the fourth book in the The Metalwood Saga.
Departing from the immediate "present-day" narrative of the previous books, the novel primarily serves as a massive, novel-length flashback detailing the apocalyptic events that destroyed the world three hundred years ago. Framing this history are the present-day struggles of Rylan and Elanil as they attempt to escape Cothellon captivity, while the surviving characters in Sylrantheas and the Under finally demand answers about the true origins of the floating sky cities and the Sundering.
Synopsis
Escape to the Under
Following the disastrous fire at the Primestore, Elanil and Rylan flee through the Muir Forest and are captured by Cothellon guards at Receiver Site Alpha (Fennas Elenathon). Locked in a concrete cell, the two discover a rare and powerful phenomenon: by holding hands, they can symbiotically combine their lightprime and darkprime magic. Using this connection, Rylan manipulates the lock and they escape.
Cornered in a massive control room, they evade gunfire by leaping through a functioning gatesender (a portal made of light), which teleports them directly into Planner Central in the sky city of New San Francisco. Escaping into the Under through the sewer pipes, Rylan discovers his friend Con starving to death in an abandoned cell. Lacking the primewood needed to save her, a devastated Rylan is forced to leave her behind. He and Elanil return to Shock Crew, where the crew's leader, Dill (Dillon), finally reveals the three-hundred-year-old history of the elves, the Planners, and the end of the world.
The Cothellon Plan
Three hundred years in the past, humanity is facing a devastating, record-breaking Category 5 storm known as Typhoon Velma. As the storm bears down on San Francisco, the Eldrim (elves) prepare to enact a catastrophic Primal ritual known as the Soulsundering to wipe out humanity and halt human-driven climate change.
Simultaneously, the secretive Cothellon faction—led by Lorelei and Quynn—are finalizing their own survival plan: the Ascension. They have spent centuries secretly building seven massive, cloaked sky cities positioned over major human population centers. The Cothellon intend to abduct millions of humans to breed darkprime mages, and ultimately plan to harness the energy of Earth's core to power a massive, planet-wide gate to teleport the entire world to a new solar system. However, the Cothellon Scientist General Orym realizes that tapping into the Earth's core will instantly destabilize the planet and annihilate all life. When Quynn and Lorelei refuse to abort the mission, Orym defects to the Eldrim, warning the Council Leader Silanar of the impending planetary destruction.
The First Human Mages
Amidst the raging typhoon, a human woman named Jessica Lim is desperate to save her eight-year-old son, Jason, who is dying of terminal jaw cancer. Through a chance encounter during the storm, Jessica meets Keya, a talented elven soulsoother. Keya realizes that Jason's mysterious ability to manipulate forcefields makes him a forcefinder, and shockingly, she discovers that Jessica herself is a naturally born soulsoother.
Jessica's husband, Alan, is revealed to actually be Thalanil, a Cothellon engineer. Decades prior, Thalanil had a brief affair with Silanar's sister-in-law, Aelynthi, resulting in the birth of Keya. Distraught over her infidelity and a subsequent miscarriage, Aelynthi threw herself from the Sylrantheas church bell tower, a tragedy Silanar covered up by raising Keya as his own adopted daughter.
The Book of Souls
Desperate to find a cure for Jason's cancer, Jessica and Keya infiltrate the heavily trapped church in Sylrantheas to find the ancient Book of Souls. Keya reads the text and realizes it contains the incantations for the Sundering ritual; horrified, she resolves to destroy the book to save humanity. Jessica, however, realizes the book contains "advanced modes" of magic that can cure her son.
A sword fight breaks out between the two women on the narrow rafters of the church bell tower. When Silanar and Thalanil arrive, a violent confrontation ensues. Thalanil is revealed to be a Cothellon mindmaster, which enrages Silanar, who uses his strengthshaping magic to tear the bell tower apart in his rampage. In a desperate bid to save her son, Jessica seizes the Book of Souls and pushes Keya off the tower. Keya hits the sanctuary floor and appears to die, but she survives. With the Book's knowledge, Jessica successfully targets the cancer cells and cures Jason.
The Ascension and the Sundering
The Cothellon initiate the Ascension, dropping gates to abduct panicked humans into the sky cities while a massive communication blackout (the Tactical Technology Defeat) cripples the globe. Thalanil manages to fix a critical hardware bug, saving City Three (New San Francisco) from crashing. During the chaos in Gate Control, Keya confronts Thalanil, but she slips and falls from the Ascended city. As she plummets toward Earth, Jason uses darkprime wood to cast a forcefield, cushioning her fall just enough to save her life. The magical interaction unlocks ancient memories and completely alters her mind, leading to her eventual rebirth as the enigmatic prophet Kythaela.
Meanwhile, an Eldrim saboteur named Dunedar successfully detonates a bomb in the Under of City Seven (New Tokyo). The Cothellon City Director, Aelwynn, attempts to hold the falling city aloft using the legendary Tree Ring Staff, but the immense magical strain causes him to soulburn and die. City Seven crashes into the Earth, obliterating a Prime Pine tree and its assigned mage, Edyrm, in California. Because the Soulsundering ritual absolutely requires a network of fourteen Trees, Silanar fears the plan has failed. Miraculously, an unexpected mage named Chasianna discovers an alternate Prime Pine in Spain while accompanying the mage Kaladar, allowing the network to be completed at the last possible second.
With the Cothellon gate network irreparably broken, the planet is saved from core destabilization. Seeing the Cothellon threat neutralized, Silanar executes the Sundering ritual using the fourteen Prime Trees. A wave of golden light washes over the planet, instantly killing 99% of the human population. However, the unprecedented magnitude of the Primal magic causes a catastrophic backlash: every Prime Tree on Earth immediately dies and crumbles to ash, permanently cutting off the elves' renewable source of primewood.
Epilogue
Two hundred and sixty years later, the remnants of humanity and elvenkind have adapted to their new realities. In the sky city of Newfris, Jason Lim (now 268 years old) and his human wife anticipate the birth of their daughter, Megan (Phoenix). On the surface, Kharis trains his son Fenian in archery, while Silanar continues to grapple with the guilt of having destroyed the world.

- Symbiotic Magic: A rare phenomenon where two mages (one lightprime, one darkprime) hold hands to combine their Will and magic, allowing for incredibly complex and powerful spellcasting.
- Book of Souls: An ancient, gilded text written in High Eldrim discovered in China. It contains the instructions for the Primal Soulsundering ritual, as well as advanced methods for manipulating the sub-particles of primewood magic.
- Tree Ring Staff: A legendary artifact composed of all seven types of primewood. It grants the wielder near-limitless access to magic, though it carries a massive risk of fatal soulburn.
