Investment

Investment

In the magic system of The Metalwood Saga, Investment is the physical, skilled action required to channel and activate uncorrupted Lightprime (Caladmain) magic.

Within the traditional Eldrim magic system, Investment is the third of four strict requirements needed to successfully cast a spell, alongside Alignment (genetic soul-affinity), Material (holding the correct Primewood), and Will (mental focus). Without a properly executed Investment, the primewood remains a dormant battery, and the magic cannot be released.

The Mechanics of Investment

Investment bridges the gap between a mage's physical body, their soul, and the latent energy within the primewood. To Invest the wood, a mage must perform a highly skilled action that directly corresponds to their specific Discipline.

As the mage performs the action—such as carving a block of wood, playing an instrument, or executing a flawless gymnastic maneuver—they channel the essence of their skill into the primewood chip they are holding. When successfully Invested, the wood flares to life, often glowing or swelling with power. Once the wood is "primed" by this physical action, the mage can then use their mental Will to direct the magic (e.g., casting an illusion, healing a wound, or leaping great distances).

Disciplines and Actions

Because every Talented elf in Sylrantheas must participate in the Waychoice Ceremony, their lifelong profession dictates the exact nature of their Investment. Each of the core Ways features specific Disciplines with unique physical requirements:

  • Way of the Builder: Mages must perform actions of creation. A practitioner of Sculpture (like Allain) Invests by skillfully carving wood or stone with a knife. Practitioners of Architecture (like Erodar the Prime) can Invest by intensely visualizing and designing complex three-dimensional blueprints in their minds.
  • Way of the Protector: Mages perform actions of care and maintenance. A practitioner of Cultivation Invests by nurturing plant life, such as carefully pruning a dead leaf from a fern. Restoration mages (soulsoothers like Eloen or Jessica) Invest by performing medical actions, such as taking a pulse or applying bandages. Preservation mages can Invest by executing acts of cleaning or shielding.
  • Way of the Creator: Mages perform actions of agility and artistry. Practitioners of Movement (like Elanil) Invest by executing flawless physical maneuvers, such as a plié, a double handspring, or a high-speed landing. Musicians Invest by playing instruments, while those practicing Inspiration Invest by delivering rousing speeches.
  • Way of the Destroyer: Mages perform martial actions. A practitioner of Bombardment (like Imra) Invests through the skilled draw and release of a bow. Practitioners of Penetration Invest by executing precise sword-fighting thrusts and parries.
  • Way of the Scholar: Mages perform intellectual actions. Practitioners of Recitation (like Kythaela) Invest by reciting ancient oral lore and storytelling. Practitioners of Instruction Invest through the focused act of teaching others.
  • Way of the Governor: Mages perform actions of leadership. Practitioners of Organization or Regulation Invest through the skilled execution of lawmaking, governance, and directing others.

Bypassing Investment

The strict requirement of physical Investment acts as a natural limiter on magic, ensuring that it takes time, skill, and effort to wield. However, there are two major exceptions in the lore where Investment is completely bypassed:

Darkprime (Metalwood)

The corrupted Darkprime (Dúathmain) magic harvested by the Cothellon completely eliminates the need for Investment. Mages wielding darkprime wood (such as ash for forcefields or elm for lightning) only need the physical wood and their mental Will to cast. This lack of physical effort makes darkprime incredibly fast and dangerously seductive, leading to severe Addiction among its users (such as the enslaved Transmuters in The Below).

Prime Mages

Legendary Prime Mages—individuals whose souls have been completely "unlocked" through the trauma of Ambarhal—do not need to perform physical Investment to cast Lightprime magic. Because their souls are perfectly attuned to the source device (Xyclami), they can simply Will Lightprime magic into existence just as easily as a normal mage casts Darkprime. When Trey unexpectedly healed Elanil from a fatal fall without performing any medical action, the Eldrim immediately realized he was a Prime Mage.
