Addiction (Darkprime Magic)

In The Metalwood Saga, Addiction refers to the severe, often fatal chemical and spiritual dependency caused by the use of corrupted Darkprime (Metalwood) magic. While the use of this magic grants incredible power, the energy acts like a highly addictive narcotic on the user's mind and soul.

The Sensation ("The Sweetness")

The onset of darkprime addiction is characterized by an intoxicating, euphoric rush that mages often refer to as "the sweetness". When a mage channels darkprime energy—such as Phoenix casting a firebubble or Rylan manipulating gravity—the power delivers an immense, sugary high that makes the user feel invincible, warm, and joyful, similar to the rush of consuming sugar or the feeling of being in love.

However, this euphoria is extremely dangerous. The magic actively calls to the user, creating a yearning that tempts them to draw more and more power to replicate that initial feeling. As the mage gives in to the sweetness, the magic begins to feel parasitic, sometimes accompanied by a hallucination of a dark, lidded eye peering at them from a purple hill, waiting to claim their soul. Experienced mages like Orym advise monitoring one's breathing during casting; when the breath becomes too rapid, it is a sign that the seductive power is taking over and the mage must back off.

Systemic Abuse in The Below

The Cothellon (also known as the Planners) deliberately weaponize darkprime addiction as a tool for mass slavery and societal control.

Deep beneath New San Francisco in a neglected, water-logged facility known as The Below, hundreds of enslaved transmuter mages are forced to convert raw waste, sewage, and sometimes even human corpses into water and Synthbeer. The Planners intentionally get these mages addicted to darkprime birch. By keeping the transmuters hopelessly hooked on the euphoria of the magic, the Cothellon ensure strict compliance. The enslaved mages are reduced to gaunt, hollow-eyed "junkies" who slump over their desks in states of agonizing bliss whenever they activate their wood.

Because the addiction is so severe, the entire underground society balances on a knife's edge. If the Planners were to stop their weekly shipments of metalwood, the transmuters would suffer from devastating withdrawals, leading to madness, violent riots, and murder in the streets over any remaining scraps of primewood.

The Ultimate Consequence: Soulburn

If a mage fully succumbs to the addiction and draws power without restraint, the ultimate and fatal consequence is Soulburn. Because the physical body and the soul have limits to how much raw energy they can channel, trying to pull too much power at once will incinerate the mage from the inside out.

Because the magic masks the pain with pure euphoria, victims of soulburning likely feel incredibly "good" right up until the moment of their explosive death. According to ancient Eldrim mysticism, a death by soulburn is absolute, permanently destroying the mage's soul.

Notable Struggles with Addiction

• Phoenix's Mother: Phoenix's mother was a darkprime junkie who became deeply addicted to the magic. Her inability to control her dependency ultimately led to her death when she overdosed on the power, causing her house to burn down around her and killing her young son in the process.
• Phoenix (Megan): Deeply traumatized by her mother's death, Phoenix spends much of her life terrified of her own Forcefinder magic. Whenever she is forced to channel her abilities, she actively struggles against the addictive "sweetness" and the dark presence that tries to overtake her mind. She relies on strict mental control to prevent herself from slipping into the same fatal dependency that killed her mother.
