Alignment
In The Metalwood Saga, Alignment refers to a Talented individual's inherent, genetic soul-affinity for a specific type of Prime Magic. It dictates which of the Seven Aspects of the soul a mage can access, binding them to a specific Way and its corresponding woodpair.
The Foundation of Magic
To cast uncorrupted Lightprime (Caladmain) magic, Alignment is the first of four strict requirements, followed by Material (holding the correct primewood), Investment (executing a highly skilled physical action), and Will (mental focus).
Alignment can be physically felt by a mage. If a person attempts to use a type of wood they are not Aligned with, the wood will remain cold and inert in their hands. However, if the mage possesses the correct Alignment, the primewood chip will feel noticeably warm to the touch and pulse with a latent, inner life, signaling that it is ready to be activated.
The Alignment Test
Among the Eldrim of Valaralda, discovering one's Alignment is a highly formalized ritual that typically takes place when an elven child reaches their tenth birthday. Overseen by the High Magister of the School of the Ways, the test utilizes an ancient magical artifact known as the Tree of Alignment, which appears as a meticulously carved wooden tree.
During the ritual, the subject touches the artifact, prompting a designated Prophet—such as the Recitation Mentor, Kythaela—to enter a trance. The Prophet interprets the soul and speaks the Twins' Will, formally announcing the subject's magical aptitude to the community. Because darkprime magic is forbidden in elven society, the official Alignment test administered by the school only registers affinities for lightprime magic.
Rare Alignments and Prime Mages
While the vast majority of mages are Aligned to only one of the six core Ways (Builder, Protector, Destroyer, Scholar, Creator, or Governor), it is possible to be Aligned to the seventh, central Aspect known as the Primal Way. This grants access to the world-altering powers of Soulsundering and Gatesending.
Legendary beings known as Prime Mages bypass standard Alignment limitations entirely. Their souls are considered "fully unlocked," meaning they are Aligned with all Seven Aspects simultaneously and can utilize every type of primewood. Conversely, mages who have been subjected to a Soulsplinter have their original Alignments divided among their physical clones, leaving each splinter with access to only a fraction of their original magic.
Political and Religious Conflict
The strict regulation of Alignment is a source of intense cultural friction. Because certain Alignments (like the Primal Way) are deemed too dangerous, the Department of Magical Research strictly controls who is allowed to practice magic. This has led to protests from fanatical sects like the Devout (also known as Believers), who carry signs demanding "Freedom of Alignment" and advocate for unrestricted access to the Seventh Aspect for all citizens.
