Earth, referred to as Mar by the Valaraldans, is the ancestral homeworld of humanity and one of the ancient Seed Planets. For the Citizens trapped in the flying cities, Earth is largely viewed as "a world consumed by death" where "the nanovirus is still there in ever-increasing amounts, roaming the entire world". Yet despite this grim reputation, from the Edge of the sky cities, one can see that "a great green forest rippled out into the distance until it met the shimmering sea. Earth was beautiful from way up here".
When elves first gate to the planet's surface, they find it to be "different. Savage. Strange. But beautiful, with great green trees and insects and birds. She could see towering pedestals of rock, billowy clouds, and the sky—the sky was a shade of blue unlike anything she’d ever seen before". To the advanced elves of Valaralda, Earth's lack of magical regulation makes it highly unusual; as Arkiem notes, "Mar is a different planet—almost, as humans would put it, the ‘Wild West’ of magic". Ultimately, the entire planet is physically transported across the universe into the Persephone system by the Cothellon's Fennas Elenathon device.
