Sorting One

Sorting One is a primary workspace for the trashboys in the Under, depicted as "a nondescript cement room, probably five hundred feet to a side, and the entire room was sweltering". The perimeter of the facility is highly functional: "The walls were lined with holes: big, circular holes that led Frame-knew-where, and there was at least one boy standing in front of each of them, with a series of wire baskets on the floor behind him". On the floor, workers encounter "a great huge mound of trash" that must be processed manually or through magical means.

The location is significant as the site where Phoenix is first introduced to the daily labor of her new squad. In this room, trashboys utilize fallfoiling magic to sort through the detritus: "The ball of trash just floated in front of the trashboy. He reached up with his left hand and began plucking items out of the air, throwing them behind him into different baskets depending on the type". Despite the "ratty hair and dirty skin" of the boys working there, the room is a critical part of the Under’s ecosystem, recycling paper, metal, and cloth for the Crew’s survival.

I just finished this series. Overall it was a good read, an interesting twist on elves, humans,and other creatures.

I did find it hard to track just who was who and when things were happening with the myriad timelines.

The one thing that truly disappointed me was the introduction of JRR Tolkien into the storyline. It felt like a name drop for attention. I was in the last book, it wasn't needed and almost spoiled the entire read for me. Hence only four stars.

These are great stories and I can't wait to read the next one. I reallybdon't want them to end.

I really liked the plot development in this series of books. I would encourage anyone who enjoys this genre, to read this series. They are a little different to the run of the mill books .

This book just wasn't to my taste in fantasy. I don't read foul language and don't like such darkness. Sorry I ordered the whole series before I realized this.

Loved the 10 book series. Exciting how all the characters merged throughout the books. Had to keep reading no housework for 2 weeks.

The writing was great, but the story was uninspired. After finishing the first book, I did not have enough interest to continue.

Good fun reading. Your use of expletives on occasion was a bit of a shock as they came out of the blue compared to the rest of the narrative, doesn't bother me, just stood out some.
Good stuff

It's a very engrossing series. Definitely doesn't slow down.
