Sakul
The sakul is a species of small, highly venomous bird native to the Kalmansa and Sholorna Wilds on the jungle planet of Eryn. Despite their tiny size, they are considered one of the deadliest creatures in the jungle.
Biology and Appearance
Sakul are small, bright white birds distinguished by their pitch-black beaks. This stark coloration makes them relatively easy to spot for those paying close attention. The primary danger of the sakul lies entirely in its beak, which contains a lethal poison; a single strike or peck that breaks the skin will instantly kill its victim, whether they are a human, an ellr, or a massive rylak.
Through the magical sight of a soulbind, it is revealed that sakul possess incredible vision. They can see the world in vivid, highlighted detail, allowing them to track the glowing trails of animal urine, and even perceive the hidden, sorcerous runes etched into the skin of the massive cavek.
Ecology and Behavior
Because a single touch from a sakul is a death sentence, they are universally feared by all sentient species and predators on Eryn. Historical accounts conflict slightly on their flocking behavior: some Eryn lore states they fly in groups of five, while other observations describe them as fiercely territorial birds that hunt entirely alone.
Sakul possess a latent telepathic network that allows them to instantly communicate with their brethren across vast distances in the jungle. When communicating through a magical souljoin, their thoughts are frantic and fragmented, consisting of rapid strings of concepts and actions (such as "Fly fast strong fear fire fire dragons" or "Fly fight foe fear firm flesh fight!").
Key Events
Cariel's Aerial Army
While the blinded and maimed ellr slave Cariel (Calarel) is dying on the banks of the Kojo River, a lone sakul dives from the sky to attack her. Using her newly soulbound kabul wildcat, Cariel intercepts the bird. Risking instant death, she grabs the bird by its venomous beak and forcibly soulbinds it, granting her the ability to see through its eyes and experience flight. Over time, Cariel recruits a flock of fifteen sakul, using them as aerial scouts and deadly assassins to systematically slaughter the rylak during the massacre of Skallgr.
The Battle of Kryptan Fortress
Millennia later, as the demisoul Jascyn leads his massive animal army south to assault Calarel's mountain fortress, a single sakul bird approaches him. Instead of attacking, the bird lands peacefully on his open palm, allowing Jascyn to form a gentle souljoin with it. Through the bond, Jascyn requests the bird's help to fight Calarel's dragons. The sakul sends out a call through its network, summoning 842 of its brothers and sisters from the jungle to join the unified army. During the battle against Calarel's mind-controlled dragons, the massive flock of sakul swarms the sky, gleefully stabbing the dragons with their venomous beaks and bringing the massive beasts crashing to the ground. Following the victory, Jascyn releases them from his service, and the flock scatters freely back into the wild.
