Fireblade
The fireblade is a unique magical pinblade wielded by Phoenix. Created by Beam, the weapon features a handle crafted from dark ash and acts as an inexhaustible source of primewood, allowing the wielder to channel immensely powerful forcefinding magic without running out of material.
Origin and Creation
Following Phoenix's resurrection and arrival on the planet Valaralda, she and Beam experience a period of strained estrangement. While sheltering from an unnatural storm unleashed by the Twins, the two finally reconcile. During this quiet moment, Beam gifts Phoenix the weapon.
Beam reveals that she had originally crafted the blade to carry with her always as a remembrance of Phoenix following her apparent death. She named it the "fireblade" as an homage to Phoenix's signature firebubble magic.
Functionality and Magic
As a physical weapon, the fireblade is exceptionally light, well-balanced, and extremely sharp. However, its true power lies in its dark ash handle, which functions similarly to the Tree Ring Staff by providing a limitless supply of primewood.
When Phoenix channels her Will into the handle, she can summon forcefinding magic. Because of her unique ability to infuse forcefields with emotion, she can drastically alter the blade's properties by accessing different magical Aspects:
- Destroyer Aspect (Red): When Phoenix channels anger or fear, the blade erupts into red flames that shoot up and down the length of the metal, turning it into a devastating offensive weapon.
- Governor Aspect (White): By shifting her emotional focus, Phoenix can cover the blade in scintillating ice.
According to the superuser Rylan, because the fireblade provides an endless conduit to Xyclami's power, Phoenix can theoretically use it to access all fourteen magical powers simply by learning to utilize the different Aspects.
Notable Uses
- Powering the Leafboat: Phoenix uses the fireblade to generate a massive, glimmering violet forcefield around a leafboat carrying over four hundred Prime Mages and Remnant refugees. The magic provides buoyancy, renders the heavily-loaded ship weightless, and protects everyone on board from the Twins' relentless storm.
- The Battle of Ilyrion: When a horde of thousands of unleashed souls attacks the heroes in the ruins of Ilyrion, Phoenix uses the flaming blade to slice through the ghostly apparitions. However, she eventually realizes that the intense emotional resonance of the Destroyer magic is only attracting more souls to their location.
- Confronting Nelenor: Phoenix utilizes the fireblade to cast layered, multi-colored forcefields against the Twin Nelenor in Lusvunub, attacking him with a mix of Destroyer, Creator, and Scholar Aspects. During the confrontation, Beam realizes Phoenix is overextending herself and kicks the fireblade from her hand to save her. The sudden loss of the weapon causes Phoenix's unfocused red magic to flood the sky, inadvertently creating a massive, explosive Soul Tree.
- The Salt Spires: Phoenix wields the flaming weapon against Quynn and the Twin Velion in the Salt Spires, using it to cast shields and fend off attacks while she and her allies battle the army of souls.
