The Ecological District is the wealthiest and most prestigious neighborhood in the Valaraldan capital of Ilyrion. It is a breathtaking architectural marvel that blends the natural world with high technology: "One might think that a district named after ecology would be all farmland or forest, green and full of natural life. And it was a forest, or at least there was a forest floor and trees. But buildings crept up around those trees, clustering and circling in metal and glass, made to fit in perfect harmony with nature. It was a fitting dichotomy; a symphony of nature and technology that only Ilyrion could produce".
The district consists of "eight city blocks that surrounded the largest Prime Tree in the city, a Prime Oak". Its buildings are gravity-defying wonders: "A series of skyscrapers took up most of the space surrounding the Tree, but they weren’t like skyscrapers on Earth—going straight up, flat rectangles pointed at the sky. No, these were unconventional buildings, with structures that angled and curved outward, impossible feats of engineering that only worked because of the gravitonic engines that kept them up. The result was a series of beautiful bridges and balustrades, parapets and glass roads that curved around and around the Tree, integrating with it in a way that traditional construction techniques never could". Home to the elite restaurant Turuvoite, the Ecological District also becomes the fateful landing site of the apocalyptic space artifact, Guruthos.
