Burner One
Burner One is a worksite and incinerator facility located deep within the Under of the flying city of New San Francisco (Newfris). Known by the underkids as the place "where all trash went to die", it is operated by the trashboys squad of Her Majesty's Navy.
Beyond its official capacity as a garbage disposal site, Burner One serves a highly secretive secondary function: it hides the primary entrance to the hidden gearhead settlement known as Trash City.
Geography and Environment
Burner One is an oppressively dark, sweltering, and terrifying chamber. The room is pitch-black, illuminated only by the massive trashburners lining the area. Because the burners erupt randomly with sudden, violent billows of flame, walking through the room is described as traversing a "starless night with huge fires on either side of you".
The heat inside the room is intense and pressing, forcing the trashboys who work there—such as Jackal—to operate shirtless and covered in sweat.
Hidden within the dark, industrial walls of Burner One is a massive, heavy sliding metal door. Because the room is so dark and dangerous, the door remains unnoticed by outsiders. When pulled open, it reveals the sprawling, illuminated, and vibrant expanse of Trash City.
Key Events
Phoenix's Demotion
After her erratic forcefinding magic accidentally destroys the Den's whiproom, Queen casts Phoenix out of the elite killgirl squad. As punishment, Queen demotes her to the lowest squad in the Navy—the trashboys—and orders her to report to Dust at Burner One at first light.
When Phoenix arrives and pulls open the sliding metal door to enter the facility, she is immediately assaulted by the roaring flames of the incinerators. Because her childhood home was burned down in an attack that killed her mother and brother, the environment of Burner One severely triggers her anxiety, causing her to suffer from intense panic attacks whenever she is forced to pass through the room.
The Secret of Trash City
It is inside Burner One that Phoenix first meets the trashboy Jackal, easily subduing him in a chokehold when he attempts to grope her. She then meets Dust (Dillon), the leader of the trashboys. After briefly testing her reflexes, Dust leads Phoenix through the terrifying, flame-filled room and manually hauls open the hidden sliding metal wall, introducing the former assassin to the secret haven of Trash City.
