The Ancients
The Ancients are an unknown, extinct precursor race of intelligent beings who inhabited the jungle planet of Eryn long before the rise of the rylak or the arrival of the ellr.
Biology and Legacy
Virtually nothing is known about the biology, culture, or society of the Ancients, as they either died out or abandoned the planet eons ago. Based on the architecture they left behind, their physical size fell somewhere between that of an ellr/rylak and a Phylax (dragon)—their structures were built on a scale too large for the humanoid species of Eryn, but much too small to accommodate dragons.
Ruins left by the Ancients are scattered all over the planet. Because the native rylak have no interest in history or archaeology, these ancient sites have been left largely unexplored and untouched.
Known Ruins and History
- The Subterranean City: The most prominent known ruin of the Ancients is a massive, hidden underground city located in a cavern just steps away from the secret ellr settlement of Aldaron. The city features stone buildings built directly into the steep cavern walls, outlined entirely in bioluminescence. The Ancients utilized a highly advanced system of ancient mirrors to reflect sunlight into the city from air holes in the cavern's ceiling, and they built smooth, masterfully designed pathways sloping through the rock.
- The Battle of Lagafel: It is speculated by some, such as the rylak packleader Jascyn, that the Ancients may have been involved in the cataclysmic, forgotten ancient war that resulted in the creation of Lagafel (the Dark Forest).
